Smithsonian Staff Provides Training to AAST Students

Four members of the Smithsonian Institution's Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage came to the Stamp Student Center on October 6 to train AAST students in the strategies and techniques of conducting oral histories of local Asian Pacific American community leaders. The videotaped interviews are slated for permanent inclusion in the Smithsonian archives. more

Curtis Chin, a writer, producer, and political activist based in Los Angeles, California, spoke at the Stamp Center last night about his life as an online and offline community activist. As the inaugural speaker in the AAST 2009-10 Distinguished Speaker Series, he encouraged the students to study hard but also to get involved in issues of importance to the APA community. more

Professor Lisa R. Mar, who teaches both in AAST and the History Department, specializes in the social and political history of immigrants, particularly Asian North Americans.

She served as a researcher and advisor for the PBS series "Ancestors in the Americans," and received a GTE grant to develop a new course on Asian Americans in Washington, D.C. more
